Dr. Atilla started ABVS to increase quality of life for animals by providing accessible specialty services to all pet parents.
It can be daunting to bring your furry friend to a separate clinic you aren’t familiar with! Oftentimes, pets are stressed in this new environment, too.
Dr. Aylin Atilla has wanted to be a veterinarian since she was five years old.
Her love of animals led her to “adopt” street animals, feeding cats that were around her city.
After going to high school in Medicine Hat, she pursued her veterinary degree, Master’s, and became a board certified small animal surgeon (DACVS-SA) before moving back to Alberta in 2011.
Dr. Atilla has experience working in large multi-specialty veterinary hospitals and has been teaching at the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for the past 10 years.
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and 3 sons as well as her 2 dogs (Beaver and Leroy) and her 2 cats (Lulu and Waffle).
From childhood, Joni knew that she needed to work with animals and volunteered at veterinary clinics as soon as they’d take her on.
She completed the Animal Health Technology course at NAIT in 2004. Upon graduation, she moved to Calgary and began her career in all fields of small animal medicine, ranging from Diagnostic Imaging (Endoscopy, Ultrasound, CT, and Fluoroscopy) to Primary Care to Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia and Surgery.
On her days off, Joni spends time with her partner and her son. Her home is full with her dog Archie, two cats, Leelou and Shoresy and a flock of backyard chickens. As if that wasn’t enough, they also own a breakfast restaurant!

Investing in our community
With gratitude, mutual respect, and reciprocity, we acknowledge the ancestral home, culture, and oral teachings of the Treaty 7 signatories which include the Îethka Stoney Nakoda Nation (consisting of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations), and the Tsuut’ina Nation. We also acknowledge the Métis people of Alberta Region 3 who call Treaty 7 their home.
While acknowledging the truth of the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in Alberta and expressing gratitude and respect for the land we use, we will continue to commit ourselves to full and proper reconciliation. Our practices as a business and with the animals in our care will be rooted in this acknowledgment and influenced by our commitment to reconciliation and continued learning. We recognize our shared responsibilities going forward to help bring everyone together on this journey of Truth and Reconciliation.
